Right after the Fourth of July 2006, the McAllister Clan headed down to Port Aransas, Texas, which sits on the Texas Gulf Coast. Because it is a barrier island, the beaches are sandy and the waters are blue-green and clear during the summer.

Even though the rest of Texas was having record-breaking temperatures, our days stayed cooler as long as we were on the beach. We brought a tent that kept us even cooler and shaded from the sun. The boys, Branduff and Niall, spent many hours digging and building sand castles and looking at the marine life in the water.

Even Sophie, our 4-year-old Border Collie, had her day in the sun. Having a vacation in Port Aransas meant that we were able to take her with us. She liked avoiding the kennel and we loved avoiding the kennel costs, which are outrageously high in the Houston area.
